The RG Virtual Machining focuses on modeling, simulation, and optimization of real manufacturing processes. The research work is characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation between computer scientists and mechanical engineers. The design of geometric and physically-based models for simulating machining processes, the analysis of sensor data, and the development of methods for an online adaptation of machining processes directly at the machine tool are main topics of this RG. Generating a digital twin of the machining process, a simulation-based analysis and an optimization of the processes will be possible prior to the real manufacturing operation. Therefore, the development of process models and methods for an efficient analysis of the resulting data, for the visualization and preparation of complex interrelationships and for the optimization of the manufacturing processes is necessary. Together with the RG Simulation and Process Development at the Institute of Machining Technology, the RG Virtual Machining collaborates on joint projects.
